Christine Albert

Christine Albert

Christine Albert moved to Austin in 1982 and since then she has become the consummate “Texas Chanteuse,” combining her musical influences from Texas to France. Inspired by her French grandmother, she fell in love with the music of Edith Piaf, and the sounds of a Parisian café began to show up in the music of this country/folk singer-songwriter. She moves gracefully between genres and her “Texafrance” series of recordings has been called "a waltz across Texas with Maurice Chevalier." Alone in the classroom or with a full band on a concert stage, Christine’s French Show covers songs by Edith Piaf as well as French translations of American classics. Christine pushes beyond a typical cabaret act to present a show that reflects the class and charisma of this cowgirl chanteuse, enchanting Texans and Francophiles alike with her mixture of Patsy and Piaf. Ms. Albert also tours actively with her husband Chris Gage as “Albert and Gage,” the popular Texas duo.

Almost Patsy Cline Band

Almost Patsy Cline Band

The Almost Patsy Cline Band is known for preserving country music’s past with stirring, heartfelt renditions and stories about the best of yesteryear like Patsy Cline, Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, Ray Price, Mel Tillis, Merle Haggard, Connie Smith, and other superstars of the Opry. Bandera's award winning Official Goodwill Ambassadors have been filling theaters and dance floors throughout Texas since 2001. "Timeless Tunes: The Stories and the Songs" is a collection of classic country music brought to life through a narration of fun, educational facts. This interactive show begins with the story of how four country songs came to have the same tune and moves through the birth of Western Swing, the Bakersfield sound, and reflects Patsy Cline’s music as it mirrored her life. State Artist Marc Burckhardt

State Artist Marc Burckhardt

Born in Germany and raised in Texas, Marc Burckhardt’s work juxtaposes old world styles and symbols with contemporary American themes. As a youth, he spent summers in Europe with his family, a tradition he continues today. The paintings, architecture, and perspectives he encounters there combine with his studies of art history to inform his work, which utilizes old masters' techniques to achieve the texture and luminosity that distinguish his paintings. Marc lives and works in a 1910 farmhouse in the shadow of downtown Austin Texas.

Carranza Puppets

Carranza Puppets

The Carranzas were inspired as children by master puppeteer Louis Parsons, who visited their schools. Years later, Mr. Parsons encouraged them to follow their dreams. For the past 32 years they have honored him by continuing this traditional art. Carranza Puppets delights in working with children by bringing children’s literature to life. David received his music education degree from the University of North Texas. He uses the puppetry arts as his teaching medium. Carol is an artist who designs and makes the costumes and sets for their productions. They founded the Greater Houston Puppetry Guild and perform and lecture nationally. Every year Carranza Puppets tours with a different story from children’s literature. They present stories in a manner that maintains the traditional integrity of the literature. When a child sees the marionette presentation, she/he will know the story in its traditional form. Their presentations (Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and others) have fully orchestrated original music, lighting and visual effects, and beautiful marionettes and staging. After the presentation, Carranza Puppets demonstrates how the marionettes work.

Chris Espinosa

Chris Espinosa

Storyteller/author Chris Espinosa (or Uncle Chris as he is known among the elementary school crowd) teaches children how to craft stories. The Story Window™, his improvisational storytelling program, trains students how to think and not what to think when creating their own narratives. Through his mesmerizing performances, he empowers students to take control of any idea and create colorful chronicles out of thin air. The Story Window™ uses improvisational techniques that harness each student’s creativity to fashion their own powerful narratives. Ideas are at the heart of this innovative program. The Story Window™ demystifies the story crafting process through the use of original graphic organizers, novel manipulatives, the five senses, and the 5 W’s. This program illustrates that everyone has a story to tell-- all they have to do is use their imagination.

The Gimbles

The Gimbles

The Gimbles are three generations of musicians rolled up in one Texas-style symphony of swing and country music. Emily, Dick, and Johnny are each powerhouse musicians in their own right but together as a family package they resonate with the very roots of Western swing, while looking forward to the future by adding a fresh and vibrant new vocal sound. Still, while the lineage of this tuneful threesome is beyond impressive, it is their music that carries the day. The Gimbles' program is a mix of Texas (Western) swing, swinging standards from the 30s & 40s, Texas roots country, and a healthy dose of humor. Johnny is in his 80s & sometimes doesn’t feel like traveling. When a booking is made without Johnny, one of the many fiddlers who have followed in his footsteps will step in. Dick & Emily are still performing that same swinging mix and carrying on the tradition of great Texas music.

Bugs Henderson

Bugs Henderson

Master guitarist Bugs Henderson's signature sound began to define itself in Tyler and Dallas during the 1970s with the blues. Henderson went from small clubs to playing on stage opening for artists such as the Allman Brothers, B.B. King, and Leon Russell. With his love for the blues, Bugs got tired of the wide-open riff-oriented rock, and friend Freddie King began pushing for Henderson to start his own band. Bugs the assembled his first record, "At Last," which was followed by 14 albums spanning over four decades. Bugs offers hundreds of original songs and his own interpretations of covers during a performance.

Houston Metropolitan Dance Company

Houston Metropolitan Dance Company

“For those of you that thought contemporary jazz was in danger of dropping off the dance map-– think again. The Houston Metropolitan Dance Company... proved, without a doubt, that the contemporary jazz idiom is alive, well and thriving.” --dancehunter.blogspot.com, 2006. Breathtaking, awesome, and inspiring: these are but a few of the comments audiences have said about an evening with The Met. Since 1995, the company has presented contemporary dance that explodes in movement, color, and emotion, mixing the most edgy styles of dance and music with the classical into a kaleidoscope of energy all audiences enjoy. The Houston Metropolitan Dance Company tours with the latest repertoire pieces created that season as well as many audience favorites. In doing so they will bring a variety of jazz, modern, and contemporary dance to a community, exposing audiences to classical movement and music and stretching them with edgy creations. A season’s repertoire may include up to 8 choreographers from Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New York, and Chicago as well as our own Texans.

Donna Ingham

Donna Ingham

For fifteen-plus years Donna Ingham has taken the ancient art of storytelling and given it a Texas twist. A college English professor in her former life and author of four books, she creates finely crafted stories from history, folklore, and her own personal experiences. And, although she did not set out to be a liar, she has been named the Biggest Liar in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and, yes, the whole state of Texas. Her stories reflect her native roots in the Lone Star State, and she chooses appropriate tales for all ages and stages. Donna continues to expand her “Tall Tales and True” touring program, adding original lies that have now won her six titles as the “Biggest Liar in Austin” and other stories that reflect the humor, history, and traditional folklore of the Lone Star State. She has begun to complement the stories with music as well. A flexible well-received program for all ages, it allows for multicultural elements and geographic scope.

Inner City All Stars

Inner City All Stars

The Inner City All-Stars exist to entertain, educate, and energize new life into the jazz experience, fusing eclectic music and a fresh interpretation of the traditional brass band. "YOU. WILL. NOT. STOP. DANCING. The best part about living in the 2000's is the different genres of music that smash like atoms, creating a brilliant flash of energy. Such is the genesis of the Inner City All Stars, who slam together old-school funk, New Orleans jazz, DC GO-GO, rap from back in the day and blaxploitation wah-wah rock into one big booty-shakin' jam." - Jonanna Widner, "Dallas Observer"

Joe McDermott

Joe McDermott

While attending the University of Texas, Indiana native Joe McDermott fell in love with Austin's live music scene. He made a name for himself as the premier songwriter and performer for the school-aged set. Joe has been recognized by Parent’s Choice Awards, NAPPA Awards, and was a national winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Joe has performed all over, from Texas to Canada and France. Reflecting on his musical career, Joe said, “The awards and accolades for my music are wonderful, but I’m happiest while playing before children, because that's where all the magic happens.” Joe McDermott's honest and unassuming style attracts the attention of children on and off stage. Joe's imaginative, thoughtful songs celebrate the lives of children without imposing an adult agenda. His songs highlight understanding, respect, and unity with families and friends. Throughout the interactive musical performance, children will laugh, dance, and sing about their own amazing experiences. Children come away with a new appreciation for their uniqueness and talents.

Serie Project

Serie Project

The Serie Project is a non-profit organization that motivates artists to pursue serigraphy, a fine art technique that is more expensive and requires greater expertise than commercial printmaking. The organization offers an artist-in-residence program that allows participants to create a limited edition of hand-pulled serigraph prints under the guidance of a master printer. Hoping to increase the presence of minorities in the art world, the Serie Project encourages multiracial participation and 2/3 of all residency artists are Latino. Serie plans to tour educational and engaging lecture-demonstrations that focus on the process of printmaking. Sam Coronado, or one of nine guest artists who have participated in Serie’s residency program, will begin each presentation with a brief lecture. Artists will discuss the artwork they produced during the residency and share their experience with each step of the printmaking process. Afterward, attendees will participate in a demo guided by master printers to gain hands-on experience with the medium.

Betty Soo

Betty Soo

Singer/songwriter Betty Soo's first studio efforts (Let Me Love You, 2005; Little Tiny Secrets, 2007, Never the Pretty Girl EP, 2007) were well received by critics, earning praise locally and nationally-- even securing her performance opportunities overseas. And she’s not slowing down any time soon. Since their release, she has earned multiple songwriting awards (including Kerrville New Folk, Wildflower Festival, and Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of the Year) and has proven herself a strong emerging live performer. Since then, Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen) has produced her latest CD, which has been picked up by Starbucks for national in-store play. Betty Soo plays mostly original folk songs, has a painfully witty onstage persona, and is also very comfortable teaching in a classroom setting. She can travel by herself, as a duo, trio, 4-piece, or 5-piece.
